With this in mind and ignoring potential OTC non-prescription sales, if you do the math, the number if issued prescriptions suggests the following:
- A large number of non-GERD sufferers are probably abandoning ordinary antacids and H2 blockers in favor of unnecessary (and more expensive) proton pump inhibitors.
- Untold thousands of health care providers must be actively promoting PPIs and issuing repeat prescriptions with little or no regard to dangerous Nexium side effects.
- Finally, whichever way you look at it, these sales figures could never have been achieved without the pharmaceutical giants spending some very serious money promoting these drugs.
