Acid Reflux Symptoms - Overview

The name ‘heartburn’ describes the burning sensation in the chest near the heart that we sometimes experience after eating.

Despite its name, this condition has nothing to do with the heart - heartburn results from irritation of the esophagus caused by acid reflux (the backing up of digestive acids into the food pipe).

Heartburn itself could be a relatively mild ailment that most people experience from time to time, or it could be a symptom of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) - a dangerous condition with possible life-threatening consequences if left untreated.

if you regularly experience heartburn twice a week or more, see your doctor as soon as possible.

Typical Acid Reflux Symptoms

Here's what to look for:

  • Pain and a burning sensation behind the breastbone, which sometimes radiates to the back. This usually occurs after eating and lasts from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours.
  • The feeling that food is stuck in the throat or in the middle of the chest.
  • Heartburn followed by a dry cough, hoarseness and a sore throat.
  • Regurgitation - Food "repeating" after a meal and causing burning in the back of the throat together with a sour or acidic taste on the back of the tongue.
  • An upset stomach, (dyspepsia).
  • Dyspepsia is another name for stomach discomfort. Here are the symptoms:

    • Burping.

    • After dinner nausea.
    • An uncomfortable bloated feeling.
    • Discomfort in the upper abdominal area.
For a quick fix, take a level teaspoonful of bicarbonate of soda, (such as the ‘Arm & Hammer’ brand), dissolved in a quarter glass of warm water.

Bicarbonate is harmless. In fact, your saliva contains traces of this substance that act as natural antacid and digestive aid.

On the other hand, many over-the-counter antacids produced by Big Pharma contain aluminum sulfide – a metallic element with long-term harmful side effects.

Consequently, bicarbonate is a far safer and cheaper alternative to over-the-counter medications produced by the pharmaceutical giants.

Could the Pain in my Chest be a Heart Attack?

Since acid reflux symptoms can sometimes resemble symptoms of a heart attack, the short answer is "maybe."

Call 911 or your local emergency number if you experience any of the following:

  1. Sudden chest discomfort or pain that lasts more than a minute. The pain could go away briefly, but it comes back.
  2. Chest pain feels like heartburn, but does not respond to antacids.
  3. Upper body pain.
  4. Lameness or discomfort in one or both arms and/or shoulders (usually the left arm).
  5. Pain radiates out to the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
  6. It feels as if someone is tightening a belt around your chest.
  7. You feel lightheaded or dizzy.
  8. You have trouble breathing.
  9. You feel confused or disorientated.
  10. You feel anxious and have a strong sense of impending doom.
  11. You break out into a cold sweat, followed by nausea and sometimes even vomiting.
